About excluding the garments industries from the rules of weekly working hours according to section 50 of The Factories Act, 1965

According to section 50 any adult worker could perform overtime-duty 8 hours per day including extra 2 hours. S/He would neither let to work nor allow to work more than 48 hours per week. The total working hour of an adult worker would not exceed 10 hours per day and 60 hours per week or 56 hours on average per week in a year. For this reason, it was not possible to let the workers to perform overtime-duty more than 2 hours. For this section of law, the continuous growth of the garments industries and the implementation of import order were being stopped. To exclude the garments industry from section 50 of The Factories Act, 1965, BGMEA had been discussing with the Ministry of Labor and Employment for a long time. At last, as a result of the keen effort of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturer and Importer Committee, the Ministry of Labor and Employment exclude the garments industryfrom the rules of weekly working-hour for six months, which can be renewed in every six-month interval. As a result, it will be possible to let the workers of the garments industries to perform over-time duty till 4 hours, which will perform effective role to face the challenge of the open business in 2005.


About excluding women from the rules of working at according to section 65 (1)(b) of The Factories Act, 1965

According to subsection (1)(b) of section 65 of The Factories Act, 1965 (E.P. Act no. IV of 1965), no women would let to work other then the time between 7.00 am - 8.00 pm.
For this section of law, the continuous growth of the garments industries and the implementation of import order were being stopped. To exclude the garments industry from subsection (1)(b) of section 65 of The Factories Act, 1965, BGMEA had been discussing with the Ministry of Labor and Employment for a long time. At last, as a result of the keen effort of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturer and Importer Committee, the Ministry of Labor and Employment exclude the garments industryfrom the rules of weekly working-hour for six months, which can be renewed in every six-month interval. For this reason, it is now possible to let the female-workers to perform duties between 8.00 pm - 7.00 am, which will perform effective role to face the challenge of the open business in 2005.
